The
MSM Database
MSM-Workstation
What is MSM-Workstation?
An entirely new implementation of MSM that provides a true desktop
client for the MSM database. MSM-Workstation offers a complete GUI-based
development and runtime environment designed specifically for Windows
and M. In addition, this speedy solution runs as a true native Windows
application in 32-bit mode.
MSM-Workstation fully integrates with the Microsoft Windows operating
system, giving you all the advantages of Windows, such as its simple,
intuitive user interface. MSM-Workstation runs on Microsoft Windows
3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95, and Windows NT.
In addition, MSM-Workstation offers support for double-byte character
sets so that you can create applications for the rapidly growing markets
of the Far East.
MSM-Workstation lets you distribute applications royalty-free.
You can sell and distribute your applications as single, standard
executable (.EXE) files with MSM-Workstation-all without having to pay
royalties. This saves you money and simplifies product distribution.
Another benefit: packaged applications simplify maintenance operations.
Because an .EXE file on a network can be shared by all workstations,
you can make a single upgrade to your packaged application and apply
the update to all workstations.
Similarly, when you apply an upgrade to the MSM engine and run-time
library as a single replacement, you don't need to repackage the applications
that use MSM. This lets you easily upgrade widely deployed software
systems.
MSM-Workstation provides full client/server support.
Based on the three-tier model for client/server computing, MSM-Workstationgives
you complete flexibility when it comes to setting up your application.
You can use MSM-Workstation to implement, configure, and package applications
that run on the desktop with a local database. Or, you can set up your
system to access remote databases resident on one or more servers. The
choice is yours.
This flexible product also includes support for local MSM databases
on the client. MSM-Workstation provides remote access to DSM, ISM, and
DTM from the client through an MSM server system.
It opens your MSM database to the rest of the world.
With its complete support of OLE/ActiveX, MSM-Workstation opens
your MSM data and applications to the rest of the world. This means
you can access commercially available, popular software from your MSM
application-or make your data available to non-MSM packages. For example,
you can use MSM-Workstation to pull M-based customer address information
directly into a form letter created in Microsoft Word. Or, you can open
Microsoft Excel from your MSM database and populate a spreadsheet with
current sales data.
MSM-Workstation improves application performance.
With MSM-Workstation, you can increase your systems speed
by storing read-only databases either locally on the client or remotely
on the Windows server system. This lets you improve application performance
without increasing maintenance complexity.
MSM-Workstation complies with industry standards.
MSM-Workstation supports a full range of industry standards, such
as OLE/ActiveX and TCP/IP. This means you can develop and distribute
applications that are open; you dont lock-in your users to proprietary
software. You also get more flexibility and additional capabilities
that protect your software investment.
MSM-Workstation protects your MSM database.
When you develop with MSM-Workstation, the system automatically
bulletproofs your applications. Whether you're creating
local databases or packaged applications, MSM-Workstation protects your
investment. Even better, these features are built-in: no setup, initialization,
or configuration management is required.
MSM-Workstation supports double-byte characters.
This solution allows you to create systems for the Asian, European,
and American markets by supporting single- and double-byte character
sets.
