DSM 7 Licensing and Pricing

December 23, 1997

After you have read this document, please go to the DSM 7 Distribution Form.

DSM version 7.x introduces a new licensing mechanism, replacing the previously-used Digital License Management Facility (LMF). This document addresses a number questions that have been raised about DSM 7 licensing and pricing.

Licensing Changes - There Are None

With DSM 7.x we are not changing the DSM terms and conditions. No customer should lose any of the duly licensed DSM capabilities that they currently have.

Migrating to DSM 7

All supported DSM systems can migrate to DSM version 7.x, on their currently-licensed computer, at no charge. This includes customers that receive support directly from InterSystems as well as those that receive support via Digital. In order to migrate a non-supported license to DSM 7.x, a customer must meet our normal support reinstatement requirement: six months of support fees (at list price) paid to InterSystems plus a new one-year support contract.

New Keys

DSM 7.x utilizes a new key format. Consequently, customers migrating to DSM 7.x must obtain a new key from InterSystems. Keys will not be available from any other source.

DCP Networking

Digital did not levy a separate charge for DSM networking. When we acquired DSM, we continued this practice, even though we did charge for networking on DTM and ISM. At that time, we told customers that we intended to charge for networking in the future. Here's the text from the June 1995 DSM Price List Supplement:

Historically, distributed database networking capabilities have been included in DSM Licenses. For other InterSystems M implementations, networking has been offered as an add-on option. During a transition period, InterSystems continues to include networking capabilities as an inherent part of DSM. Note, however, that InterSystems intends to unbundle networking capabilities in the future.

With DSM 7.x, we are licensing networking as follows:

  • DDP networking will continue to be available at no extra charge. It is provided as an inherent part of the Open M license, without the need of an Open M/Server license.
  • DCP networking will be offered as an extra-charge item (via Open M/Server and Open M/Server with Single-User Client licenses) consistent with the licensing and pricing for DTM and ISM.

SQL Capabilities

No changes are being made to the licensing of SQL capabilities for DSM systems. These relational capabilities will continue to be packaged and keyed separately from DSM.

Visual M Capabilities

No changes are being made to the licensing of Visual M capabilities on DSM.

Support

Support for DSM 7 will be available from both InterSystems and Digital (in those areas where Digital currently offers support,) but only according to InterSystems Open M terms and prices.

Limited-Time Migration Offer

To encourage migration to DSM 7.x, we are offering a special migration program through June 1998:

  • Users will receive free DCP networking. More specifically, customers will receive an Open M/Server license with the same license count as their Open M license.
  • For each DSM site that migrates, customers will receive an 8 process Caché Division license.

This will enable DSM customers to begin using Caché SQL and Object capabilities, either stand-alone or in conjunction with their DSM systems. InterSystems will provide free support for these licenses for one year, after which the customer can decide whether or not to purchase support.

Digital ConDist

We expect that DSM 7.x will be included on Digital's ConDist software distribution CD-ROM. This will make it easy for Digital customers to get our new software, although they will still need to obtain a key from InterSystems.
